Splendors of Water
Water and Earth
Water sustains life on Earth, and with 3/4 of the world covered by it, water also provides shelter to millions of living species. 97% of this water is sea water with the remaining meager 3% of it being freshwater, essential for our survival. Ice caps and glaciers make up 68.7% of this fresh water while only 30% exists as ground water of which; 87% is contained in lakes, 11% in swamps and only 2% in rivers. These proportions have changed with the history of Earth, with the fluctuations of sea levels due to the Ice ages. Even during the course of the year in the winter seasons both poles contribute significantly to increase the presentage of the Earth's fresh water store.
All animals and plants need water to survive, and the human body is more than three-fourths water. Life-forms use water to carry nutrients around the body and to take away waste. Water also helps break down food and keep organisms cool, among other very important jobs.
There are two primary sources of water-surface water and groundwater. The primary water sources used for drinking, cooking, washing, farming, and other commercial uses are surface water, groundwater, and collected rainwater.
With no water supply, all vegetation would soon die out and the world would resemble a brownish dot, rather than a green and blue one. Clouds would cease to formulate and precipitation would stop as a necessary consequence, meaning that the weather would be dictated almost entirely by wind patterns.Biggest water problem - Agriculture consumes more water than any other source and wastes much of that through inefficiencies. Climate change is altering patterns of weather and water around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some areas and flood sin others .
Using water-saving techniques can save your money and diverts less water from our rivers, bays, and estuaries, which helps keep the environment healthy. It can also reduce water and wastewater treatment costs and the amount of energy used to treat, pump, and heat water. Our planet is water ! Water is Life ! Without it we would cease to exist.
