Under the Sea
The Great Barrier Reef
At 2600km the great barrier reef is the largest reef in the world. The reef is made of billions of tiny creatures called coral polyps, and is the largest single structure made up of living things. Some parts of the reef are more than half a million years old. Thousands of species of fish, plants and turtles make up it's beautiful and vulnerable ecosystem. About 400 types of corals, 1500 species of fish, 4000 species of Mollusca live here. There is biodiversity is high.
35% of coral reef in northern and central part of Australia's great barrier reef have been bleached and destroyed, scientists say. This destruction occurs due to the weakening of coral reefs algae species that produce oxygen and nutrient salts. Global warming, depletion of the ozone layer and climate change contribute to this rising sea water temperatures and causing coral bleaching degradation, which is a serious threat to the entire ocean system and many other species that live on coral reefs are also facing that danger for their survival. Human activities are the main cause of above events leading to the destruction of the great barrier reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is a gift from nature. So we must protect our resources for next generations. Love to nature.
